Milk Dumping During the COVID-19 Pandemic

April has been an economic disaster for many American dairy farmers. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, dairy farmers were hopeful as they watched milk prices on the rise. However, once the pandemic commenced, many dairies were forced to dump their milk. With restaurant and public-school closures, farmers were seeing drastic decreases in demand. Furthermore, corporate grocery retailers have enforced purchasing limits to avoid hoarding. This has taken a major toll on the producers and processors in the dairy industry. Many co-operatives have refused to pick up milk from farmers. Since cows are at peak lactation during this time, producers continue to milk and care for their cows. However, this milk is being repurposed or wasted.

This pandemic has been a tragedy for our nation. With many citizens unemployed and unable to provide for their families, they are reliant on food banks. The government continues to search for a solution to get nutritious dairy products to Americans in need.
